Gerrit-Jan van Uffelen

A graduate from Wageningen University in agricultural and environmental sciences Gerrit-Jan van Uffelen has almost fifteen years of working experience with war affected communities and disaster victims in various countries in Asia and Africa. He has gained extensive expertise in the design and management of relief and rehabilitation programmes in various thematic areas including food and livelihood security, environmental protection and community services. In 2006 Gerrit-Jan van Uffelen obtained a Doctorate in Social Sciences at Disaster Studies, Wageningen University. His PhD research originated from a first hand account of the impact of repatriation programmes on war displaced communities in various return contexts recommending for the international system to be more sensitive towards people’s own return strategies. He provides consultancy and advisory services for various agencies mainly in the field of disaster relief and reconstruction. In 2008 Gerrit-Jan took up a part time position at Disaster Studies and as the Food Security Research Co-ordinator oversees the implementation of the LEAFS research programme and undertakes research himself in the global food security policy domain.
